Lots of comments floating around the internet at the moment along the lines of "Omg it caused Sony's stock to jump 10%" well http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/sony-stock-rise-board-consider-entertainment-spinoff/ is also worth a look

A suspicious mind may be inclined to think that Sony held off until the XBox reveal.

Google tells Microsoft to yank its new WinPhone YouTube app

GBL Initialiser

Is there any evidence that the app actually blocks the adverts? If not then it could just be that it's incapable of displaying them due to Google's refusing to cooperate with Microsoft on the issue. I do wish there was a viable competitor to YouTube then Google would so easily be able to use it to attempt to stifle other services.

The main issue I have is hypocrisy. Google thinks all the content (News, books etc...) on the internet are their god given right to use as they wish but then they go and point fingers.

Apple wins documents fight with Google in Samsung case

I hover dangerously close to sounding like a Microsoft fanboy at times but not even I can stand Bing. I gave it a fair shot but as I had to repeat most searches on Google I decided that there aren't enough hours in the day.

The answers you seek are in the last paragraph of the article.

There are ways of searching for things that aren't via www.google.com.

The EC, however, would argue that it's a little bit too easy to search Google with Google. ;)

Re: "Thinner and lighter"

"Us the back button to exit all your applications as it will close them. Then the battery should easily last 2 days....quick battery use is almost always rogue apps."

Yeah, tried most things. I managed to squeeze out a bit more life by changing some settings and I always close apps anyway. I haven't yet seen anywhere near two days though and using the GPS & maps a few times means you hadn't better use it for much else.

GBL Initialiser

Re: "Thinner and lighter"

The only thing I can think of is that it would be good if their plan to have cafes have wireless charging stations on the tables had panned out. As much as I love my 920 I have to admit that the battery life is a bit of a pain in the backside.

GBL Initialiser

Re: Meh

You couldn't get hold of the vile gloss yellow coloured one in Denmark when I went to get my matte black 920. They were sold out because apparently people find the yellow one retro. I wonder if any of them have seen retro mobiles.

GBL Initialiser

Works in Europe too (and it's a damn sight cheaper, at least in Denmark). I think the 920 was the first phone (or one of the first) that could manage 4G in the UK.

GBL Initialiser

My Lumia 920 has something called "4G" is there some difference between 4G and 4G LTE that I'm missing? I must admit I don't bother to keep up with that kind of stuff.

Samsung vs Apple: which smartphone do Reg readers prefer?

GBL Initialiser

Surprising as the WP8 App is great. It even provides an easy way to open a particular article or comments section in the browser if you need a feature the app doesn't support.

GBL Initialiser

Wrong when it comes to Nokia (WP8) too. Cloud backup restores text messages, settings & apps. Photos are generally auto uploaded but I don't think it pulls them automatically.

There is also a banner version of the advert that takes you to the same URL and seems to play the audio automatically too, can't be 100% sure as both the original and the banner showed up at the same time.

URL of the banner advert is http://www.aldaniti.net:8080/imagenes/creatividades/20130228112334.swf

Re: More adverts, everywhere.

@Fatman

Anyone who has been around here for any length of time knows to pay sod all attention to down votes anyway. More often than not they are the result of either saying something mean that could hurt the feelings of a famboy's chosen company or the amount of inconvenient truth in a comment.

GBL Initialiser

Re: @GBL initialiser More adverts, everywhere.

@ DF11

Blocking adverts = You getting access to content you want whilst depriving the content provider of money

Dictionary definition of parasite = a person who receives support, advantage, or the like, from another or others without giving any useful or proper return, as one who lives on the hospitality of others.

I think you will find my logic, in this particular instance, is fairly grounded in reality.

GBL Initialiser

Re: More adverts, everywhere.

@cybersaur

I don't watch TV. Back when I used to I didn't mute or channel hop, no. In fact advert break channel hopping bugs the hell out of me. The only time I didn't at least hear the TV adverts was if I was leaving the room to make a drink or some such.

Your analogy is somewhat flawed anyway. I'm not sure of the exact details because, as I said, I don't have any business dealings with advertising but I know there is such as thing as "cost per impression". When an advert is requested and displayed on a website it records an "impression", blocking means no request is made to get the advert so it directly costs the site owner money.

Re: More adverts, everywhere.

"You have that choice. Don't use services with adverts. It's that easy."

ABP users often ignore this though and try to spin it in a way that they are entitled to access the content on their terms. One of the excuses that crop up time and time again is 'I pay for internet access, why should I have to watch adverts?', I don't feel I need to point out the gaping hole in this argument. Frankly I consider the use of ABP parasitic and attempts to justify its use arrogant.

P.S. no, I don't make money from any services even remotely connected with advertising before someone tries to pull that one.
