FYI: Ticking time-bomb fault will brick Cisco gear after 18 months

Gert Leboski
Trollface

Intel perhaps?

From what I read, it could centre around the Intel Atom C2000 series. My understanding is that this includes the C2718 / Avotons which I understand from other research into a low power hypervisor host, would burn out/slow down/fail after around 12-18 months use.

If it is around Intel kit, that would explain the obvious NDA that Cisco is under. Who else has the clout to impose such a thing on NetZilla?

Re: Time for a Great Firewall

I've found that the majority of brute force attempts against my ssh servers originate from the USA, so a great US firewall will be of benefit to me, here in the UK, as long as they filter outbound traffic.

It won't help the USA much against internal attacks though, will it?

Oi, Mint 18.1! KEEP UP! Ubuntu LTS love breeds a laggard

Gert Leboski

Why the negative title?

I'd opt for stability over cutting edge, especially for those new to Mint or Linux in general.

I've not upgraded from 18 yet, but it looks like there could be a few compelling features, such as the vertical panels to save screen space on my laptop.

Really, I'm happy with the Mint team's approach and philosophy. Nothing negative or laggard about it, IMHO.

Verizon is gonna axe its 'unlimited' data hogs

Gert Leboski

Re: Maths!

Misleading advertising has come back and bit Verizon in the behind. Not much more to it than that.

Okay it's apples vs oranges, but on my VirginMedia 200Mbps down, cable connection I'm bringing down between 3 and 15GByte a day and sending anywhere from 12 to 25 GByte upstream. All legitimate, non-commercial traffic. Every day. VM have a pretty simple traffic management policy, which I stay well within, using my own traffic shaping.

However, if they took Verizon's stance with me, I'd be kicked off inside a week.

I pays my money, I use it considerately, ensuring I'm not swamping my tail-end and the physical connection I share with my neighbours and I stay within their published thresholds. So far they've treated me well, if they decide to play hard ball like this, I'm screwed.

Must keep an eye on T&Cs.

Amateur radio fans drop the ham-mer on HRD's license key 'blacklist'

Gert Leboski

D'uh!

Bloody naughty to disable active, paid for, deployments in retaliation for open criticism. That crap about it being impossible to say how many were "wrongful" deactivations, as some or many may have been genuine cancellations and refunds. Surely you have records of those cancellations and refunds? Your accountant would insist on that, surely? Then you take the number of cancellations and refunds from the total number of deactivations over the same period and you have your wrongful number of deactivations. Your accountant could probably explain that to you, too.

Is your Windows 10, 8 PC falling off the 'net? Microsoft doesn't care

That's a lot of floor walking for IT, going to each and every workstation, getting a privileged command prompt and typing that, was kind of a point I made earlier.

Re: It's all a bit farcical, isn't it?

I'm not sure how setting anything in DNS is going to help a machine get on the network in the first place.

Gert Leboski

Re: It's all a bit farcical, isn't it?

That would probably work well for home users, with limited devices on their LAN and the privileges to set networking on the machine.

In business environments, there are a lot of devices requiring IP addresses, which DHCP makes manageable without much human intervention. Very often, usually and ideally almost always, end users in business don't have the privileges in Windows to manually set a static IP, so it comes down to IT support to go do it for them. It's a lot of grunt work for small teams and because of the nature of it, being networking, can't be done remotely.

Gert Leboski

It's all a bit farcical, isn't it?

This new patching model isn't working out too well for the end users, is it? I wonder if the benefits outweigh anything negative, from Microsoft's perspective, whatever those benefits might be?

Busted Windows 8, 10 update blamed for breaking Brits' DHCP

Gert Leboski

Re: Surely a common router/firmware incompatibility?

Well, a VM customer below reports the same DHCP issues with Windows 10. Possibly timings on response time?

Totally unaffected here, but I have OpenBSD providing DHCP over LAN and a Unifi AC-Pro access point plugged onto that.

Gert Leboski

Surely a common router/firmware incompatibility?

The Windows clients are not working with their local DHCP provider, which is on the LAN interface(s) of their domestic router.

DHCP isn't hard, but there is quite a bit that can be set there that usually isn't.

Are these routers putting out a field:value that something in the Windows patch is choking on? It wouldn't be the first time that Microsoft have tried to rewrite the rules of basic networking or web protocols to suit their own means, is it?

Re: so then the only real difference between this

Same. I have an AC-PRO on the ceiling above the stairs. Works a treat with excellent performance, even downstairs and in the garden are way more than acceptable. If I wanted to get an additional LITE version for half the price of the Pro and put it downstairs, there'd be superb coverage with zero hand-off and lots of management and monitoring features.

I'd like to run Google's equivalent to my setup and see how they compare, especially with one eye on pflog.

PC World

I worked at a PC World in the mid nineties and this was standard practice. If you nipped out for a ciggy you were searched, but that was obviously in company time. The search at the end of the shift was always in your own time as you were expected to be working right up to the bell. Mind you, customers leaving with trolleys that had PCs or anything looking remotely expensive also had their receipts checked against what was on their trolley.

Then again, hardware crime was in fashion at the time. This was when offices were being burgled for the CPUs and RAM, with the rest of the computer being left behind.

Ladies and trolls: Should we make cyberbullying a crime? – Ireland

Gert Leboski

All very well, but thinking practically...

As pointed out by the AC above, I read the article and immediately thought about the "Hail Mary Cloud" approach to cyber-bullying, which then opened up the "but what if..." floodgates of my mind.

Whilst I agree that if something is illegal in the physical world then it should also be illegal in the online world, I can't even begin to imagine how this could actually be imposed and policed, on a global scale, without it being useless due to open interpretation and also represent a serious risk of abuse by corporations and governments.

Something should be done, the shape of how it might look isn't a million miles away, but the practicalities of implementing, administering and effecting these laws isn't even a vapour right now, let alone something tangibly solid.
