What you need to know about moving to the Azure public cloud

AMB-York Silver badge

Still not sure

I keep toying with the idea of moving my servers to Azure. As part of my Action Pack sub, I get a budget for cloud.

2 problems:

1) It seems to become very expensive very quickly

2) I get a weekly email about scheduled downtime - I'd normally arrange downtime of my own servers around my work. not possible with cloud.

I'm just using it for demo installations at the moment. That brings the other problem that you can't use Save/Resume as in HyperV, so get the choice of running all the time (expensive) or allowing time to start.

Nearly got caught out the other day - if you shut down from within the server rather than the console, you keep paying!

Even more sure there's some open source build of something out there that does it dead cheap too.

Frustrating

I use IE for work apps as I can keep cookies etc kept open. I use firefox for general browsing. Just wish they'd stop mucking around and do some proper 'innovation'. Rounded boxes don't count.

Google gives me the creeps, so no Chrome. I found Iron to be unstable. Didn't like Opera, so that leaves me with IE and Firefox.

Come on - fix the plugin mess - what were they thinking when they disabled Flash without a popup to tell you what was going on? Slight change to the web address far too subtle and not visible in full screen mode.

Just wish the end result of open source software wasn't a messy UI and a massive settings/options dialogue box. Nobody wants to work on the boring stuff - rounded boxes are much more interesting!

Re: WP

I should point out - the bit about being secure through having a minority device was a joke.

The bit about owning a Nokia 520 in nasty red is the truth.

AMB-York Silver badge

Re: WP

Doesn't look like it. All us WP users can be smug in the belief that we have a safe phone OS. Sadly, the truth is that we're an obscure minority who buy cheap phones. Not worth hacking as there's not enough of us and we can't afford a better phone, so nothing to steal.

I've been working with Windows 8 for a few months now. Windows 8.1 on my laptop for the last month or so.

Strange what you get used to.

Worth having the Start button again, just for using remote access - getting the menu up was a pain over a windowed RDP session.

I've had my Windows 8 phone for nearly 2 weeks. I like it, but can't believe it's taken Microsoft so long to get this far.

Re: Sad farewell

I'm way ahead of you there - took the account as right at the start, otherwise BES can't claim 'Send As' permissions. It's something more than that - the server would work for a week or so, then stop. Recreating my account in BESx would make it work for another week or so.

AMB-York Silver badge

Sad farewell

Sad to hand back my Blackberry Bold today. Major problems with BESx with Exchange 2013, started due to being domain admin with email account (I know you're not supposed), took myself out of the group, but still failing for the one account. Tried using IMAP etc with BIS, but never seems to sync back to Outlook properly. I just don't have the time or skills to fix this.

I'd love to go for a Q10, but with O2 offering me a Nokia 520 at £60, how could I refuse? Got a red one, so hopefully my wife will like it too, then I can get rid of BESx once and for all.

Fix the email first
