Sir Terry remembered: Dickens' fire, Tolkien's imagination, and the wit of Wodehouse

Mike Arthur

Ah, sad day indeed.

His books still have the power to make me properly laugh out loud.

A great writer, made very clever use of the language to provide entertainment to so very many people.

I had the great fortune to meet him on several occasions in the early 90s whilst I was working in a bookshop. Funniest memory was being sent across to the supermarket across the road for a couple of bags of frozen sweetcorn (had to be sweetcorn, not peas) for him to put on his painful hand after spending several hours signing all manner of items.

Anyway, I shall send my assistant off to the shelf to bring me something of his to read.

'Oook?', 'yes please, that one'

BOFH: Shove your project managementry up your mailbox!

Mike Arthur
WTF?

/sigh

This is all depressingly familiar. I'm currently on a large project officially listed as 'Subject matter expert' which apparently translates as the poor bastard that does anything the PMs can't work out where to put.

I find in most cases you can safely drift off during the project meetings and then use the resulting meeting update email as the basis for whatever you need to do.

O2, GiffGaff network goes titsup for unlucky punters

Mike Arthur

I have no voice or text capability, also no data connection showing, however I'getting updates and email quite happily, no wireless here so it's not that.

Apple iOS4 upgrade adds multitasking, folders... and pain

Thumb Up

like the folder function, and the spell check not treating me like a retard is nice, other than that, not really noticed a huge amount of change

Microsoft offers Windows 7 early and cheap to volume customers

What about those of us (admittedly numpties) that actually bought Vista?

Are we going to get anything discounted, after all, we're the ones that have experienced the pain, not the sensible people still using XP :)

Tumbleweeds outnumber punters, as iPhone's First Night flops

We are not used to paying for handset AND contract over here.

Connecting at a snails pace won't do it any favours either.

I will most likely get myself an IPod touch at some point as that gives you all the best bits of an IPhone without all the downsides....

Perfectly happy to keep my fone seperate from my MP3 player, that way you get devices that do exactly what they're meant to do, instead of some super-hyped hybrid that doesn't quite deliver as a phone.

MS Patch Tuesday to include trio of 'critical' fixes

Mike Arthur

Here we go again

It's MS bashing time...

Let's face it for the vast majority of non IT literate users Windows of whatever shade is undoubtedly the way to go. Simple, easy to use, easily the best supported, widest range of software etc...

The big machine builders, Dell, HP etc ship windows on the bulk of the machines they sell, why? because that's what the public want.

The majority of readers of the Reg are IT literate, working in IT somewhere, so are more likely to use other OSs and therefore able to point out flaws, compare between different OSs etc. This doesn't mean that Windows isn't the 'right' choice for Joe Public.

I work with Windows, solaris, various *ix but use windows at home, why? I like to game a lot and if that's your boat, you cannot use anything other than windows.

Dell trips over printer cable

Mike Arthur

I got one

The Lexmark all in one that I bought came with a USB cable.

Which was a pity really as it didn't work, as soon as I swapped it for one of the multitude of other USB cables I had it worked perfectly...
