Is this cuttlefish really all that cosmic? Ubuntu 18.10 arrives with extra spit, polish, 4.18 kernel

g e

Freezes and wifi dropouts

Ubuntu has always has issues holding wifi stable in my experience but upgrading to Cosmic from Bionic on a Dell XPS13, bought with Ubuntu installed, which has been perfect (bar the occasional wifi dropout) since November now has random freezes (fixed only by holding power down to reboot) and very frequent wifi disconnects which aren't always recovered by restarting network-manager. Had to setup my VPNs again too as existing ones failed to start after updating to Cosmic.

Worst update in a while for me.

Oh and my workspace switching shortcuts all got reset along with the workspace layouts. Grrrrr

I always assumed that a good chunk of the ridiculous price that MS paid for Skype came from the Us Gov't as part of a payoff to MS to somehow backdoor that pesky 'untappable' app.

Re: Yet again

Except now those opportunities are toxic due to the IR35 stuff that created them in the first place ;o)

g e

Re: Yet again

This outcome is all far too obvious which makes me think the gov't have an ulterior motive/agenda for shoving the small individuals out which they surely knew would happen.

The first thing that comes to mind is lining their pockets via various kickbacks from large co's like Capita, etc. Maybe it's actually something more subtle which will be played out in a year's time when a fictitious 'skills shortage' is being moaned about. Well. Not fictitious to the Public Sector but no-one will be reminding Joe Public why that shortage is there due their DIY toxic status.

Also the general lack of awareness/action in Public sector and the Agencies is astonishing.

Binning my Public Sector contract before end March, one week's notice plus making sure the last payment falls before April. Fuck 'em. They brought in on themselves.

Re: Common sense.

I'd not be surprised if the ball-kicking people somehow categorised a football match as a 'performance' in the same sense as a Neil Diamond or Iron Maiden gig.

Therefore they can claim to own the IP of the 'performance' and carry on in exactly the same way as say EMI demanding a takedown of video of an artist's gig somewhere (even in a public park) as the content of the media contains a performance of their IP.

On a GT related note, I did read a BBC news 'article' about the launch of GT and it seemed noticeably butthurt and pitifully childish, decrying the big budget 'cinematic' opening to the show - like you're going to launch a new flagship show with a pitiful, weaselly cheapass intro; ah yes, BBC.

If you've not watched GT yet, it's pretty much Top Gear. With a nice budget. As you'd expect really.

UK.gov has 18,000 IT contractors on its books due to dearth of skills

g e

Re: down tools

Same here, was just discussing this yesterday with a consultant I'm working with who's been looking into IR35 and public sector after I mentioned it to him a while ago. He will also be shifting contract to private sector in the absence of any guarantees/indemnities against HMRC deciding he should pony up extra money just because.

So there's one central England county council whose entire project is going to stop dead in April, potentially even though it has a couple of years to run yet, supposedly.

What is the current best information on what IR35 will be in April or is it still just as (intentionally by HMRC) woolly as it's been since the idea was first touted about ?

That context isn't a 'Thing' you have it's actually a documented phenomenon with human recall. It's not called 'changing context', IIRC but it's essentially the same meaning, like moving from the living room to the kitchen to subsequently forget what you went for, only to remember immediately once you returned to the living room 'context'.
