Microsoft Windows Mobile 10: Uphill battle with 'work in progress'

Phoenix50

WTF?

Andrew, I couldn't have disagreed with you more if I've have swiped left and sent this article to the Junk.

You complain about hamburger menus being out of reach - but fail to mention the new feature for larger phones where you hold down the start button momentarily and they screen jumps down within reach - it's a neat addition and one that shows the developers are thinking more about the UX than you give them credit.

As for Outlook, I have none of these issues on my 1520 - and yes, it does crash now and then but I would expect a pre-release version to. The speed improvements are considerable and the whole setup feels more fluid - I don't know where you are getting the idea transition effects are somehow worse?

And as for the Store taking "2 days" to install the requested apps - dramatic-much? What were you doing it over, a 56k modem?

Microsoft starts to fix Start Menu in new Windows 10 preview

Phoenix50

What?

They've hardly "completely fucked it up" have they?

Is there so little to complain about the Register is having a go at Microsoft for not allowing more the 2048 shortcuts on the Start Menu?

2048? Who uses more than that? Is that all you've "got"?

No, Microsoft: Your one-billion Windows 10 goal is just sad ... really sad

Phoenix50

Goodness.

Erm, hang on "El Reg".

A month ago you were sneering at the idea Microsoft could achieve a billion installs with Windows 10 and now you're saying that not only is the number not enough, you're calling out various iterations of the damn thing as not even "counting" towards it!

Sort yourselves out. You're a mess.

Windows 10 on Mobile under the scope: Flaws, confusion, and going nowhere fast

Phoenix50

Enough.

Oh for goodness sake - now the phone's been changed around TOO much so it's become bland?

Newsflash - and I say that sarcastically, because you of all people are already aware of this. The Windows Phone of "old" was, in many ways a lovely design and a great user experience.

It.

Didn't.

Sell.

I don't like to see that - but it's the truth. So now they've modified Windows Phone to the extent it looks a bit like Android - is that the billion+ sales of handsets running Android you're referring to? So f****ng what. If it sells phones and allows Microsoft to offer their services (I said services, not O/S) as an alternative to Google then so be it.

You can't have a go at them for failing to sell any phones then have a go at them for failing to stay the same!

Change or die.

Microsoft has RECORD quarter, in a BAD way - Sad Nad slashes phone biz

Phoenix50

It's all about the Spin...

Oh, don't get me wrong - we knew the Nokia bomb had been thrown so I'm not overly surprised by the news. But I guess it's what you focus on isn't it:

◾Surface revenue grew 117% to $888 million, driven by Surface Pro 3 and launch of the Surface 3

◾Total Xbox revenue grew 27% based on strong growth in consoles, Xbox Live transactions and first party games

◾Search advertising revenue grew 21% with Bing U.S. market share at 20.3%, up 110 basis points over the prior year

◾Office 365 Consumer subscribers increased to 15.2 million, with nearly 3 million subscribers added in the quarter

◾ Commercial revenue increased slightly (up 4% in constant currency) to $13.5 billion, with the following business highlights:

◾Commercial cloud revenue grew 88% (up 96% in constant currency) driven by Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM Online and is now on an annualized revenue run rate of over $8 billion

◾Server products and services revenue grew 4% (up 9% in constant currency), with stable annuity performance offsetting declines in transactional revenue

◾Dynamics revenue grew 6% (up 15% in constant currency), with the Dynamics CRM Online install base growing almost 2.5x

BUT:

◾Office Commercial products and services revenue declined 4%

◾Windows volume licensing revenue declined 8%

◾Windows OEM revenue decreased 22%

Al in all? I'm not particularly panicked about the above - some downturns, but nothing that taken me by surprise. I think that main thing I can take from this (because I choose to), is that their diversified efforts are bringing home the bacon - Windows revenue might be in decline, but if there are 3 or four other billion-dollar business going great guns, then the future is just fine for Microsoft - even if no one is sure what the end picture will look like.

Microsoft to Windows 10 consumers: You'll get updates LIKE IT or NOT

Phoenix50

Re: THE SKY IS FALLING!

Yeah, hang on let's guess:

"install Linux".

Yawn.

The END of WINDOWS EVERYWHERE! Is that really what Nadella wants?

Phoenix50

Hang on.

From the title "Is that really what Nadella wants?"

No it isn't because that's not what's happening.

Windows Phone "written off".

No it isn't, because that's not what's happening.

Someone show me, from Nadella's statement exactly where it states either that Windows Everywhere will now not include Windows Phone, or that Windows Phone is closing down. It doesn't.

You must all be so upset - so I'm sorry to burst the bubble of so many journo's frothing at the mouth declaring Windows Phone has "done a Blackberry" but it hasn't.

In his statement, Nadella said, quite categorically that they will continue to release phones focusing on three segments. That's it! There's nothing else to say - Windows Phone is going to continue. I don't understand why everyone is so excited at the prospect of it "ending".

Or is everyone perfectly happy with Android or Apple for the foreseeable future? Just two? No other credible competition?

A Ford or a BMW? You choose.

Phoenix50

Re: I think it's way too soon to be writing off Windows Phone

No, they haven't.

Nokia != Windows Phone

Microsoft SLASHES 7,800 bods, BURNS $7.6bn off books in Nokia adjustment

Phoenix50

Re: That Reminds Me

It did, but they've pretty much turned it around.

Try again.

Phoenix50

It's nothing personal, it's just business

Drama to one side for the time being, Microsoft are cutting costs and becoming leaner and meaner.

One of the single biggest costs to a company is it's people - so I'm not overly surprised by this.

The naysayers who bemoaned Microsoft for being a bloated corporation now try and seize on this as a portent of doom, when in reality it's simply yet another company saving money by shedding people.

As for Nokia- the sooner we get their next FY results out and done with, the sooner they can get back to supplying their 1.5 billion customers.

Phoenix50

Re: I'm starting to lose track of this

Well, far from calling him an outright "liar" - he has stated they will focus phones on three segments: business, low-end and flagship.

So less models? Perhaps - a "death knell" not quite.

Phoenix50

Re: That Reminds Me

It's not far from becoming Microsoft's next billion-dollar business unit.

We tried using Windows 10 for real work and ... oh, the horror

Phoenix50

Confirmed...

...no, not that Windows 10 is crap, but confirmed that they truly, truly could never win, no matter what they do.

Andrew notes they've not been guided by a dictatorship - so instead they've been guided by all of us!

Yes, that's right - the largest community-driven, feedback friendly development cycle in the HISTORY of Windows and Microsoft and apparently they've STILL got it all wrong.

I simply, completely and utterly

give.

up.

Linux Mint 17.2: If only all penguinista desktops were done this way

Phoenix50

Goodness.

Positively gushing with unrelenting praise from every orifice.

If ever proof were needed that this website is basically a Linux fansite then surely this is it.

A significant update to a popular distro and nothing significantly bad to say? NOTHING?

If Windows 10 gets anything near this positive a review on this site next month - bias or not I'll show my arse in ASDA.

FTC: All-powerful Google ABUSED rivals. So we did NOTHING

Phoenix50

Re: Google dominance

So as long as you think they make good products, that's ok then is it?

What happens when they start making sh***y products? What then? Are they a big bad monopolistic abuser?

Do you decide that then? Is it just "tough luck" that no one else has come along and beaten them on the quality of their product?

But hang on...what's this? Google manipulating their search results to promote their own services above everyone else's?

But then how will our new start-up who has a better product ever get noticed? Don't you see what's happening - Google are the seller AND the product and in doing so they have gained almost total control over all they survey.

I don't care what side of the Atlantic you're on - that's WRONG.

Microsoft: Even cheapo Lumias to get slimmed down Windows 10

Phoenix50

"New chapter for a sad story"

My god Gavin, you're not even trying to hide your hatred for Microsoft anymore are you?

Just come out already and admit it - they could s**t gold bricks into your bank account for 10 years and you'd still slag them off.

I'd say I'm sick and tired of reading your unapologetic bias against them, but I have just about enough energy to bother coming on here and commenting on it.

Rumours of on-premises software's demise greatly exaggerated

Re: Sharepoint?

If your "admin" is re-ordering things at 2 in the morning - then sack your admin.

Free Windows 10 could mean the END for Microsoft and the PC biz

Phoenix50

Re: Soooo...

"Now, tell me again about this "supported life of the device."

Why does that matter? Here's an idea - why don't you download Windows 10 and install it on that PC:

1. Are you doing so within the first year since Windows 10 has been released?

2. Have they asked you for any payment when you've downloaded or installed Windows 10?

If the answer to question 1 is yes, and the answer to question 2 is no - CONGRATULATIONS! You are now the proud owner of a PC running Windows 10 - it's YOURS! FOREVER! When you trash the computer and send it to the great PC recycling plant in the sky you'll need to buy Windows 10 again - but that's obvious isn't it?

Isn't it? They're selling everyone a f****ng OEM for FREE, for gods sake. Why is this so hard.

Phoenix50

Re: Free now. Pay (and pay again) later

"I think we can assume that this is a preview for the Windows subscription model where ordinary punters are required to pay annually almost as much as Windows used to cost to buy outright."

Why can we? How can you possibly assume that? It's a free upgrade if you chose to do so in the first year after release. Once it's done, it's done. It's yours - off you go into the great beyond. That's IT.

If you upgrade AFTER that first year, you will have to pay a small upgrade fee.

What is wrong with everyone? Why is this so hard to understand? This isn't about trickery or smoke and mirrors - this isn't even about "Windows versus Linux". This is just about people being blind and STUPID.

R. T. F****NG M.

Will fondleslab's fickle finger of fate help Windows 10?

There's one piece of malware on a Chromebook I'm afraid you've not spotted...Google.

Phoenix50

Re: I think I'm getting old :(

A Microsoft account will be and currently is, optional.

Don't want tracking? Turn it off!

Don't like the theme? Change it!

Come on, you can do better than that.

Here are some more words for you:

Some crap.

Google unveils Windows 8.1 zero-day vuln – complete with exploit code

Phoenix50

90 days?

Utter tripe. This has got nothing to do with "90 days" being enough time (though frankly - how anyone here can know for sure that 90 days "is enough" to develop a fix is beyond me).

This is about Google acting like the world "code" police - who the f**k do they think they are? They've set themselves up as protectors of the realm and now go around handing down edicts as though they own the f*****g internet? Who's next? Apple? Adobe? Oracle?

I find their attitude astounding. More arrogance from the chocolate factory, as usual.

Key to Windows mobe app sales? Er, LOW MEMORY, of course

You fixed the bloody comments section yet? If not - TTFN.

Open Source's 2014: MS 'cancer' embrace, NASDAQ listings and a quiet dog

Phoenix50

Re: Nope.

Of course it has - people can crow al they want about "embracing" this and that, but Microsoft is still a commercially-driven private enterprise. There's nothing more to it. This is about survival - only a fool would fail to recognise the shift in worldwide computing to a more open model. Microsoft are merely changing course to ensure longevity.

And so what if they are? Doesn't everyone benefit? Can someone point me at a legitimate negative to MS embracing open source? And no, your saturated hatred of Microsoft as your raison d'etre will not suffice.

Doctor Who trashing the TARDIS, Clara alone, useless UNIT – Death in Heaven

Phoenix50

What a wonderful finale...

... No, not the last Doctor Who of this series, Brid-Aine's reviews of the episodes.

Kill them, kill them with fire.

Clara goes to the dark side, with dark secrets revealed in Dark Water

Phoenix50

Well I loved it..

When she said "well I couldn't go on calling myself Mistress" I thought OMG, it's Romana! Because that's what K9 used to call her. But that makes no sense.. Much like the rest of the series.

Still love it though :-)

Lumia 830: Microsoft hopes to seduce with slim 'affordable' model

Phoenix50

Re: What a weird world

Bull.

Nothing you've listed there has got anything whatsoever to do with Windows Phone - those problems could easily be experienced on any handset no matter what the operating system. And what about the apps? Yes some are missing but if you read up and know what you're getting into there are plenty of alternatives that get the job done. Using it as the anti-Christ poster boy to lambast Windows Phone is tiresome, unimaginative and old.

Redmond top man Satya Nadella: 'Microsoft LOVES Linux'

Phoenix50

So what?

Hate Microsoft for many many things, but don't hate them for trying to survive.

Only a fool would imagine that we are still living in a "Windows world" - they know this and so does everybody else.

Satya is doing what any good CEO does when his core business is under threat - diversify.

Why is that so hard for everyone to understand?

Doctor Who's Flatline: Cool monsters, yes, but utterly limp subplots

Phoenix50

I'm done with it...

... The Register reviews each week obviously, not Doctor Who.

I love Doctor Who and certainly don't need to analyse the shit out of it every week.

ONE MILLION people already running Windows 10

Phoenix50

Re: An improvement over 8 but still a long way to go

And yet you still very much desire to tell anyone who'll listen about how much you don't desire it anymore.

Crack on mate.

If you're happy to accept your popularity will suffer with inane comments (MY opinion) then you have to accept challenges to your position.

Suck it up.

Doctor Who becomes an illogical, unscientific, silly soap opera in Kill The Moon

Phoenix50

Oh dear.

So many people taking so little, so seriously.

I loved it because it was another episode of Doctor Who. A show I've been watching since childhood. A show that always manages to take me back to those times. A show that's not perfect by any stretch, but it doesn't matter to me - I'll always lap it up.

Stop being so disappointed that it doesn't meet your exacting standards for the perfect science fiction drama.

Vanished blog posts? Enterprise gaps? Welcome to Windows 10

Phoenix50

Moving apps

I believe you can right click on an app and choose "move > [desktop]" when you're switching between multiple desktops; and drag and drop functionality will come later.

I don't think it's fair to simply say "Windows 10 = Windows 8 with a Start Menu. And Multiple Desktops" - even if you ignore the current slew of changes (subtle and obvious) the build is in it's infancy. Mary J Foley reported that Microsoft said the current build has only 10% of new features in it.

If I were an average consumer shopping for a computer to replace my current one on 7 or 8, and I walked into a Shop and saw "Windows 10" - I would instinctively feel as though it was a much newer version that my current PC - and would want it more. It's a shrewd move by MS that might pay off in the consumer space.

One Windows? How does that work... and WTF is a Universal App?

Phoenix50

Are you also going to stop complaining once you've used a stable gold build of the damn thing and not a technical preview that exists solely to provide feedback to Microsoft?

Wow. Been at the Kool-Aid again? Amazing and world changing for Google's advertising revenues perhaps.

Not appy with your Chromebook? Well now it can run Android apps

Phoenix50

What's this? Google shoe horning mobile apps on to it's desktop operating system?

Oh yes, of course that's ok. Microsoft did it the wrong way round but Google should be applauded.

Business as usual then for the freetards.

Apple's big bang: iPhone 6, ANOTHER iPhone 6 Plus and WATCH OUT

Phoenix50

If you want a chuckle

I urge you to stop by Engadget and The Verge - they are collectively creaming themselves over Apple's latest announcements. It's absolutely hilarious.

To paraphrase:

"Never in the history of mankind has so much been made of so little that cost so much".

I'm just happy to see everyone slagging Apple off and giving Microsoft a break. I'm sure it'll resume tomorrow once the usual El Reg suspects decide to "comment" on the latest news from Redmond. Oh well, enjoy it while it lasts.

Claim: Microsoft Alt-F4'd Chilean government open-source install bid
