Why does the RAF need a jump jet?

In Supersonic stealth jumpjet achieves its first mid-air hover

The RN and USMC I can understand but what purpose does this plane serve for the RAF? Surely they're not still hiding out in German forests waiting for the Warsaw Pact to attack?

In HP buys 3Com for $2.7bn cash

Thumb Up

I've said it before but Cisco's stranglehold on networking - admittedly one they gained because they have awesome products - isn't in our best interest. All the other great names in networking have fallen by the wayside over the last 10 years or so and it's encouraging to see the once mighty 3COM aligned with HP, hopefully getting them both back in the game in a big way.

RE: At least the Nissan

In Tesla cashes multi-million dollar govt cheque

The Roadster isn't the be-all-and-end-all of Tesla's product line, it's just their first offering. In many ways it's a PR stunt designed to generate interest in electric cars and the Tesla brand, and dispel the myth that electric cars are slow poor performers.

Their next product will be the "family sedan" Model S which is at the low end of totally unaffordable but who's to say Nissan's first production electric car will be any cheaper? Besides the S could be the next big fashion accessory, the automotive equivalent of the iPhone.

RE: Enough of the anti Microsoft rubbish, the register!

In Behind Microsoft's IE-free, Windows-for-Europe ploy

I agree. The whole bundling of non-removable car sound systems thing is a massive ripoff. If you want better sound you used to be able to get the system of your choice from the local shop and plug it in, nowdays you need to purchase a whole new model car and you're still limited to the two or three different sound systems the manufacturer offers. Bastards.

Voluntary mandatory system FTL

In Great Australian Firewall may be optional

This is the end of the Porn Proof Fence.

Voluntary codes of conduct are something industries engage in to prevent otherwise inevitable govermnent-imposed regulation. In this case government regulation is not inevitable, it is virtually guarenteed not to happen. Therefore there is very little pressure on the ISPs to conform.

The best Conroy can hope for at this stage is the ISPs will throw him a bone in the form of an opt-in value added filtering service their customer's can choose to buy (with hardware supplied at government expense?). But given the poor relationship between the honourable minister and the ISP community, even that may be too much to ask for.
