BOFH: Explain? All we need is this kay-sh with DDR3 Cortexiphan ...

Martin Huizing

KAY-Shing, simply brilliant!

"KAY-SHING – not CASHing" he says, speaking slowly so the Boss can understand.

"But surely it's the same thing?"

"It IS the same thing, but if we use the KAY pronunciation it'll stop anyone thinking there might be money involved."

I challenge you to say Kay-shing with 'shing' raised out loud. I hope that was intentional...

Missed chances imho.

A simple oled display under the glass giving basic info on the drive would be great. Free space, throughput, up time in hours, power save mode, etc.. A mirror? I'm not a girl, and definitely won't be waving a spinning drive in front of my face, while connected to a pc.

"without unlimited resources"

Nice wording which should read as "with limited resources", which has actually a completely different meaning. How come they have limited resources? They're an AV company. If anyone has the tools, it should be them. The dinosaur analogy also seems like grasping at straws when it comes to protecting their integrity. Sharing is caring, imho. Especially in the AV business.

Google Cardboard to the rescue!

I bought a few kits online (self assembly required) and it works great with my note 3. Rift 2 is actually using the same display as the Samsung's one. At first there were only a few demos which often crashed but now there is an abundance of games to play which can be downloaded from various stores.

The other day I had the chance to finally play an immersive game and got no motion sickness. I strapped the Cardboard Virtual Reality visor to a helmet so I didn't need to hold it. Google Earth in full 3D glory was amazing. All this and only at the fraction of the price of the Rift. I know my phone isn't as powerful as a pc but I can really see this taking off with the next generation phones sporting a good graphics chip.

Re: False sense of achievement maxed out...

Whoa, you Wild Beast you. Just stirring the pot a bit.

I actually respect people who can balance a job and enjoy their hobby, whatever it is. Me? I have quite a range of hobbies that some people might call wasteful. But this sums up my general feeling:

From the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25944837

"I keep thinking, I would love it," wrote LockeNCole on Reddit.

"I could build a little section of the universe for my own.

"Then I realise I have kids and would rather play with them."

Re: False sense of achievement maxed out...

You are absolutely right, ofcourse. Bit of tongue in cheek on my part. I enjoy games as much as the next person. Some might call my time spend a waste also.

Future of technology.

I have downloaded movies, but only because I live in China and some movies are just not released here. Accidentally I also downloaded cinema recorded (or cam movies) and, over the years, watched the quality of these get better and better. I also like to keep up with recording tech, and I can say this; the future is either you have to go trough a metal/recording device detector or mandatory body/cavity search before able to enter the movie theater. Wearable tech is the future. Samsung's wrist camera already has a great resolution.

Add high capacity storage and ant-shake tech to the mix and those cameras will be easier and easier to be carried inside a theater to record movies in much better quality than ever before, instantly uploaded into the cloud.

I, myself love going to the movies and enjoy them on the big screen. IMAX 3d still blows me away. High ticket prices prevents me from going more than once or twice a month though. Downloading movies here is as easy as a click on a button.

E-tagged insects a buzz for research

Martin Huizing

Saw a docu about bees the other day. What struck me most was how bees communicate with each other in their hives telling other bees where greener pastures could be found. The mathematics in their methods is astounding. I believe understanding their social interactions will greatly increase knowledge and help scientists come up with theories on why Colonies collapse.

So much left undiscovered in the animal kingdom. I hope one day it will help us find ballance before it is too late.

Snowden: 'I am still working for the NSA ... to improve it'

Martin Huizing

Here is a man who has caused millions, if not billions worth of damage by his actions. Made countries mistrust America on whole new levels and did it for no other reason than trying to make the world a little better place to live in. Will they learn ? Ever?

Me personally I can't wait to see what other dirty little secrets will be revealed in the hope 'Murricah will stop playing World Police and let the right parties intermediate in international conflicts and affairs.

What I don't understand (and perhaps there are reasons for it), is why the US media isn't in an uproar or why Americans aren't up in arms over this.

Maybe they just don't want to bite the hand that feeds it...

500 MEELLION PCs still run Windows XP. How did we get here?

Martin Huizing

Re: But slowly – over time @Kunari

@Big D

What are you talking about? Only reason people didn't go for xp that time was cause most pc's were running on less than minimum -or barely enough memory required for xp. That was also a time most memory wasn't compatible with one another. People who upgraded to xp had to w a it 1 or 2 minutes start up for office docs due to page swapping. Until my hardware was up to it, I was happily using 98, second edition. ME was a disaster, IMHO.

Quantum computing gets recursive

Martin Huizing
Thumb Up

On the other hand...

The moment we actually create a working quantum computer, the whole game chances and there will be a leap forward , technology wise, similar to the industrial revolution.

3d printers will be the norm as they will be able to reproduce every carbon made item on the menu.

3d printed computers with unfathomable capabilities, able to perform tasks in seconds that would take current cluster computers months to compute. Eye wear that can visualize any environment and setting any where in the world and meet your virtual friends there.

The future is bright, the future is quantum!

Can you imagine what evolutionary hurdles we, as humans, had to overcome to be able to survive in such a harsh environment such as space? We have only just grasped the concept of stepping out of our comfort zone and explore potentially lethal environments just for the sake of exploration.

Hats off to these pioneers! Please, please make peeing in space more safe for us mere humans.

Wow, nobody talks about the elephant in the room?

America spies on everyone. EVERYONE. They say some countries are excluded, but those countries rely on monitored countries' network infrastructure. Who is to say communique through those countries isn't also intercepted. Another thing is; strangers like Mr. Snowden can rummage through our stuff without constraint; ie every one of them is a potential blackmailer. Luckily for us Ms. Snowden was of sound mind not to use gathered knowledge against individuals but to expose a huge security issue that affects us all.

My files or their files?

My files or their files?

Something very interesting I noticed on Google Drive. On the main page a list of documents can be seen. Click on (or touch) it and you can view the document. I did just that with a presentation file. When I made some changes I went back to the main screen to see if the time stamp had changed correspondingly.

Then I noticed under the word "OWNER" the word "me". Got me thinking. 'me' as in 'me, Martin Huizing' or 'me' as in Google?

Re: Slow News Day Or April Fools?

II, for one, welcome relevant news coming from China. Not only because I live here, also I see a change in Chinese mentality. People want to address issues closer to home and, through social media, are finally able to let their voices be heard. 'Slow news day' means no news to report. Just cause you think it doesn't concern you, doesn't mean it is not news.

Things I'd like to see in a future iteration of a 'smart' phone.

1. Absolutely no smart cam watching me all the time.

2. Absolutely no smart cam stopping a movie when I am not looking at it.

3. No extra software/services running in the background doing medial things like constantly looking at me. Save it for the battery, thank you very much.

4. No more infra-red. "Yes, I control my TV with my phone" - signed: Absolutely Nobody

Okay, that is what I don't want to see. Here is what I do like to see:

5. GPS is a God-send. Let the Einsteins focus on getting better location services instead of eye tracking, head nodding etc...

6. Dedicated camera button. Once to turn on, once again to take a pic and long-hold to start video recording. Not too difficult, right?

7. Easy sd card access without having to take out the battery * already in most new smart phones.

8. Less touch sensitive screens. Isn't there a slider where I can set the sensitivity level? Every time I watch a freaking movie on my S3 I accidentally touch either the screen (pause), home button (go back to menu).

9. Stereo cam and 3d screen. Ohh... 3D.... Porn comes to mind, but No! I want to see Google Earth in full 3d! Awesome!!!

You got more, let us know!

Fondle-clap Surface vs the rest (now including Apple as well)

Have you noticed notebooks, for sale, being displayed at an enormously weird angle making you look up at the screen while squinting down to read which key strokes you inputted when finding the system specs.

If you were finally to come home with your top of the range beauty and set it down on the table with the leathered swivel chair you bought specially for this occasion, you'd had that grand feeling all of us geeks yearn for and the need for it is encoded in our genes. "This is my Laptop, I'll limp to the John, this is for shaking and tissues for fun". Time to enjoy your new toy, your sex-mate, your pal hooking you up with unforeseen damsels in distress through Graig's list. The gaming machine that kick's your anonymous playmates asses. The coolness factor when showing it off to friends and foes alike, the glow in the dark that you can clap shut when moms suddenly enter. Ooehmpfff... ***breath***

On the same shelf I noticed the MS fondle-clap IFKAM Surface PC color range.

And while all other notebooks and tabs were mishandled at an inappropriate angle, the surface PC felt right at home there. Only to be tried, never to be buyed (Oh, I know it is terrible, but it rhymes)
