USSS- Treasury

The SS was formed by the treasury Dept. in the 19th century to fight currency counterfeiting.

When it became apparent that US Presidents needed bodyguards, the SS was used because it was the only federal police force that existed at the time (way before the FBI).

SOA benefits: too much reuse of reuse?

Curtis W. Rendon
Boffin

@Frank Gerlach

Bravo, bravo!

As a Structured Programming and design follower, I've seen code reuse tossed around for 30 years. It rarely happens in the corp. world, but open source and languages like Perl and Python with their app. libraries make it happen a lot more.

As a previous poster alluded to, short single purpose functions, with limited number of arguments, no globals, single entrance and exit, well documented args and returns and descriptions of what it is supposed to do, placed somewhere it can be found is the only hope for reuse. OOP is just too scary, as the high priests think the code is supposed to be secret magic.

3rd World for most of the rest,

and then failed states.

Enlightenment, more to come

M$ is insisting that Virtualization vendors implement the Enlightenment "shim layer", to allow the guest image to be aware of and in formal contact with the hypervisor. This will allow a direct path for hacking by breaching the firewall between the guest and the host environment, and probably allow for some interesting DRM and EULA enforcement as well.

NASA issues revised 2008 shuttle launch schedule

Curtis W. Rendon
Boffin

Leave them in space III

Well (as someone who has had the pleasure of working with the Shuttles in the past) as said before, the shuttles aren't equipped for onorbit resupply. Besides crew consumables, there are the cryogenics for fuel cells, hydrazine for thrusters and OMS. It might be possible to work out some method to do so, but currently there is no ability. If I remember correctly the tanks assume 1G for tanking, so it might not work.

Orbits: The shuttles would have to be placed in high enough orbits so they wouldn't reenter and burn up after a couple of years. The ISS orbit is too low for this, that's why it requires periodic reboosts. Hubble's orbit is high enough, and certainly the shuttles can make it that high as a shuttle was used to place it there in the first place... Something to keep in mind is that NEO (Near Earth Orbit) isn't a benign place. Highly reactive monatomic Oxygen and Hydrogen are constantly attacking surfaces, as well as micrometeorites and space junk. Satellites intended to stay aloft for a long time are better protected to such then the shuttles, so the vehicles may not be terribly useful after a couple of years on orbit.

An interesting idea nonetheless...

Academics propose carbon-capture kit for cars

fuel conversion

Energy Conversion Devices (inventor of the NiMH battery) produces a fuel converter whereby any organic fuel can be run through it to produce pure H2 and Carbon (black). Burn or run the Hydrogen through a fuel cell, catch the solid carbon in a suitable container, and there you are.

Carbon black is a valuable commodity, and no problems with high pressure containers for either H2 or CO2...
