You're holding it (in the) wrong (country).

Re: 30%

Paypal do not take 30% of everything, is that what you're sugesting?

David Barrett

Re: Passive version

Not sure how passive it could be, its still going to have to detect and chase stuff to match speed etc, I doubt a big ball of blu-tack will do much when a space bolt hits it a 2km/s.

"I swore for my next update that soldered memory is preferable to a mem that might not be there when you need it! - so WinP7 won. Duuno what I'll get next time!"

Hmm, then the Mozart must have been a tough choice given that its bundled memory is provided by an 8GB MicroSD card. Its a fu*ker to change (requires a void waranty and a torx) but at the end of the day its just a concealed SD card held in with a piece of tape.

I believe the mozart can handle upto 32GB but its a bit picky about what it wants shoved in it.

Actually I think I know

O2 have a mobile formatted My o2 site which would only work if you used your mobile data as opposed to home broadband to view it (unless you registered your home connection with them)

This appears to have stopped working now... and the header seems to have gone..

Could be interesting fudging someone elses phone number into the header and accessing that site as there was no authentication, Im betting you could view their bills, tarriff info and call history - ill certinally give this a shot when I get home tonight and attempt to get my partners data to display via my phone...

"their insistence on moving to Silverlight for streaming"

Don't Netflix use SL as well? - I thought that they did.

David Barrett

And?

If I do anything outside of my contract I expect to be paid extra for it.

David Barrett

All they seem to have done is overlayed a div over the normal content showing a message, firebug/IE Dev toolbar does a good job of allowing access again.

David Barrett

If you keep your life savings in your current account or give your savings account details to PayPal..

Id suggest that either of the above would be a dumb thing to do.

David Barrett

If you read the article you would see that the result of this would be 700 High res images of a smashed car with dead people in it...

David Barrett

As opposed to "training them" by letting them run into the side of crossing cars?

Id much rather if they were going to do it that I had some way of knowing about it in advance...

David Barrett

Its not going to be retro fitted to all cars... So it will do little to stop some knob in an h reg astra ploughing into the side of me.. Unless its fitted to my car and warns me in advance that there is a knob on the loose...

David Barrett

Yeah, because banning people for speeding put a stop to that didnt it?

The very fact that you can get a ban for driving without a licence should tell you all you need to know about the kinds of drivers that we are talking about here.

David Barrett

.. true, with the exception of when they are forced.

Given the option to change and loose a small percentage of their customers or stay with flash and loose most content and thus the most custom they would do a cost benefit analysis and decide on the better option.

Of course the best option is to do nothing... Until you are forced, as they have been.

David Barrett

Wikipedia says...

Wikipedia says that Windows has 87% market share at the moment,

So if there are 2000000 love film users that means that 1740000 of them are running windows some of the remainder will be using PS3 etc and the rest running Linux/Mac.

Now remember that Love Film is a business, it exists to make money.

Is the best way to do this to devote a huge amount of resource on developing HTML5 (esp given that others are activly doing this)?

No.

Is the best way to do this to stick with flash and end up with no content to stream?

No.

Is the best way to move to the next best technology which is available and will work for 87% of your users...

Probably.

The fact is that MS have not said either way that they are scrapping SL, from what I have read it is supported in Win8 so will need to be supported until it comes to the end of its life (so at least 5 years) that give LF some time to play with a long term strategy for content delivery, whilst maintaining some content in the mean time.

I guess that Netfix etc are being given the same deal by the Content Providers, It will be interesting to see how they react.

Finally, What happened to moonlight?

David Barrett

"What are LoveFilm thinking"

Probably something along the lines of "If we dont do this we will have nothing to stream... Best crack on with it"

David Barrett

Correct me if Im wrong, but...

I suspect that the frame rate may suffer?

David Barrett

(about 25% in the UK) [Citation Needed]

Do you have a source to back that up?

Not saying your wrong but I was under the impression that it was MORE than that - Im not in the 1% and Im paying somewhere in the range of 20-25% (Never actually looked at it)

David Barrett

Yeah, thought so...

$75 saved over 35 years!

Woohoo!

I could almost an pack of chewing gum a year with those savings!

"We are enormously grateful for the hard work of those who salt the roads in all hours and in all weathers"

All Weathers? Pretty sure its just ice and snow... Not much call for a "Summer Salting"

PS. Are they f**cking serious? blessing grit?

David Barrett

Why a "phone app", could this not be a mobile formatted web app? wouldnt that be alot less effort and more cost effective?

David Barrett

Maybe the engine doesnt need to spin for the plane to glide?

...

Better than my idea of a snake catapult...

David Barrett

Actually I find it easier to believe in prozzy -> donkey conversion given that I can observe prozzies and donkeys now and can confirm that both exist, its just the conversion that requires some faith at this stage.

3 packs of 10 every 2 months?

What would anyone need a lifetime supply for 10 people every 2 months for?

Good point, this is exactly why I am currently living in a box for the next 10 years and trying to save 300k to buy a house outright instead of getting a mortgage...

Ok, so a house is a slightly bigger investement but the idea is the same, if you can buy outright its going to be cheaper, but thats not going to be an option for everyone.

Do I have £500 right now?

no.

If I did would I blow it all on on a phone?

No.

Would I be willing to pay a bit extra to spread the cost over 10mo - 2 yr?

Yes.

Ps. I didnt do this, I went down the middle and got a cheaper winmo phone on contract. £25 per month 18 mo, no upfront cost Probably works out at +£100 the cost of the handset over the life of the phone, but I can think of many things Id rather spend a wad of cash on in one go which win out over a phone!

David Barrett

If there is any hope, it lies in the proles.

David Barrett

"This is not the way to do things in business as I see it"...

Maybe, but I think the stock price would suggest otherwise.

David Barrett

letters.

Hey, its a giant white galaxy tab 2... Oh wait..

David Barrett

letters, digits to follow.

No, but ill bet Apple has :)

David Barrett

only if...

... you're over 14 if your under 14 then it is a legal requirement that you wear a helmet.

David Barrett

because....

How fast is your connection? 15mb/s

Download something big, watch iplayer and do a speed test at the same time, whats the speed test saying now?

Any results from an app like this would be skewed by whatever is happening on the users pc/network.

It would be an option but it would have to be built into the router so that only when there has been a period of inactivity is a speed test done. There is little point if one PC is watching iplayer, at the same time as some one else in the house plays xbox live.. or indeed when some one has left the PC on overnight downloading movies (Not that anyone does that.. its naughty).

David Barrett

exactly...

IPhone 4 over 24 months ~£1700 my HTC Mozart win pho 7 same 24 months ~£750

I don't care if it makes coffee and womens clothes fall off in its presence I'm not paying £45 a month for a bloody phone.

David Barrett

Rivise your estimate on age...

Im 29 and I dont know any better... But that might be a problem that is restricted to me... :)

David Barrett

read article again

Unaffected.

David Barrett

"It was just a 1m lead with 1.5mm jacks on either end"

Are you sure? Or was it an actual digital cable (Fibreoptic) like all of the MD players that I had in the late 90s sported (look like 3.5 jacks but with a pointer end and fibre core down the middle) - in fact if I remember correctly on my old sharp MD player the fibre cable actually went into the headphone socket... so EXACTLY the same as a standard 3.5 jack.

Although I agree its been going on for years... there were fibre optic cables on offer with Gold Plated contacts...

David Barrett

almost but...

...not.

Nothing to see here (literally), move along.

David Barrett

yes...

Me.

Not 1 not 2 but 3 police cars came while 2 pricks tried to knick my motor bike whilst threatening me with a bottle.. So yes.

Indecently, they got 2 years each and I went home on my bike (police also turned a blind eye to my slightly overdue road tax ;)

David Barrett

How does it actually work?

So I dont upload my music, it scans my library, matches to itunes and then gives me access to that music on itunes..

How does it check that the music it finds on my PC is actually the track that it says?

Could I for instance take an mp3 of me singing in the bath, add the metadata for something else and then get cloudy access to the something else?

Or (as may be more likley) have I misunderstood the whole thing?

David Barrett

Not really

You are missing the context.

Boots (foot ware) != boots the pharmacy.

I think that you'll find it difficult to open a pharmacy called boots, however you are still free to sell boots in your shoe shop.

If your making your argument in support of apple I think that you'd do well to remember that there are green spherical objects which predate the companies trademark but are unnafected by their trademark on the word.

David Barrett

So..

I need to keep a spare corded mouse on standby incase something happens to my wifi router?

Ill stick to my CORDED (Yes, corded.. in 2011!) keyboard and mouse.. The battery life is spectacular!

David Barrett

Signed up.

Well thats me signed up.

Should there be a rapture Ill have a nice list of fresh meat for at least the first few weeks..

Or as I put it on the form:

Question: How many pets can you handle?

Answer : 3 a day as long as theres ketchup.

Any one fancy a BBQ on the 22nd?

David Barrett

Is this news?

As far as I am aware BT are members of the DCP (defence career partnerting) program... So this is part their daily hr activity and has been for some time.. why report it now?

BT Trying to generate more interest in the service rather than who installs it methinks.

David Barrett

Hire?

I can see a market for hire companies here... eCar for weekly commuting cheap hire for long haul.. how many people need to travel more than 50 miles to work? (Probably a few and for them Id suggest a normal car for now) - that assumes that you cant recharge at your place of work.

David Barrett

HAHA

Not seen that for years!

Angelina Jolie .. MMMMNNNN

David Barrett

Mr Tumble?

Wouldnt Mr Tumble have been on cbeebies?

I believe the CBBC tech corespondant is Roy...

David Barrett
Joke

Water 'remembers' what was originally put into it...

No one is claiming that water can 'remember' what is put into it, thats just spin added by non believers like you... you have to put the water into a jar and hit it on a HORSE HAIR and LEATHER pillow for it to take an impression of the molecule that you have long since diluted out of the jar...

:)

To be clear on this... If you have a 200C dilution of anything in water, what you actually have, is water.
