I use p2p to distribute software updates for an OpenS app I wrote a couple of years ago which helps kids with learning difficulties. Now tell me, how exactly is that wrong?. Why, in your mind is it the customers fault that they are using the bandwidth that has been sold to them?. You, like many ISPs' seem to think that the TCP/IP starts with port 80 and ends with 443, which is all well and good, if the service is being sold as sole use of those ports. But hey, it's not so shut the f*ck up.

I'll save time with my normal witty comments, in answer to your comments.

1. Yes M$ have fecked up a bit with every Exchange release, but even M$ wasn't foolish enough to release it as a service to paying end users, they left it to us in the 'job' to massage exchange into submission so it was usable, which happens before releasing any service to the end users. Comparing anything to a M$ product isn't going to win any arguments, we all know M$ is pants.

2. We use a Mac OSX for one of our DNS, well, one of our DNS's anyway, you see professionals like to go multi vendor on important stuff. As this is the only DNS platform which hasn't been fixed it is now switched off, leaving our Linux boxes(centos, ubuntu, debian) to answer the 2,000,000+ daily dns queries.

You seem to think this article is just another attack on Apple, well I would like to think ElReg would write up a similar article on any tech organisation who provide a PAID FOR service which appears to have not been fully tested/maintained. Oh, hang on a minute they have, for example:--

Satellites

The bestest (sic) DC's I've hosted in have fail-over satellites dish uplinks. Admittedly it costs a bit but there is really no real excuse for lost of connection when there are failover options, you get what you pay for. If i was responsible for large websites like Sainsburys or the FT you can bet your bottom dollar that I would ensure that it was hosted in a DC with satellite failover.

Google was cool as the work/life balance was/is part of the companies ethos and as Mrs Mouse had just given birth to Danger Jnr I was surely thankful to the management for allowing me to work flexi time even tho I was only a junior sysadmin at the time. Although, the software engineers/math cowboys may have had an different experience working for them, but I tried no to have much contact with them as the majority thought they were 2 Cool 4 School.

Working for Microsoft sucked,it was like working in an accounts department. I left there to work for a cardboard box shifter called Amstrad, yes Microsoft were really that bad!.

And before you ask, I left Google to set up on my own, having been given the options to go back if things went tits up. which was nice :).

HP Mini-Note

Just thought I'll mention it while we're on the subject of UMPC's. I got a HP Mini-Note the other day as my Eee was no match for my fat fingers. It came to £354 all in, not really worth it for the spec, but worth it to save the pain in my back lugging my full size laptop from datacentre to datacentre. And before you say it, yes I am made of money :).

Most of the online reviews are for the Vi$ta version so I thought I'll add a few notes on the Suse version on the off chance anyone is interested.

The Suse Desktop 10 enterprise implementation is appalling, sorry, I didn't mean appalling, it's the Antichrist. Whoever created the master image must have been drunk, it's almost as though he/she thought they were installing Window$. Firstly, Bootup time is around 60seconds, which isn't bad if it was running XP or Vista, but 60 seconds with a linux OS? come on HP do your homework. There's a hundred and one other problems with it, but the most amateurish 'issues' are with software installation/updates configuration, i.e

Yast is configured to look at a local optical drive for file repositories (guess what, yeah, there isn't one)

A majority of the applets listed in the System & Tools section of the god awful menu system are not installed, so guess what happens when it asks if you want to install the missing applet?, yeah you guessed it, it looks for the CD/DVD.

HP do not supply a restore disk/flashkey with the Mini-note, and there is'nt a built in mechanism to create one, and before you ask why would you want a restore CD if there isn't an optical drive?, HP do supply an instruction manual on CD, go figure. However, you can phone HP support and ask them to send you a restored CD (after 30mins on hold while the nice man from call centre Goa asks his supervisor WTF as they don't seem to have any documentation on the Suse version of the Mini-note). I believe you can download an ISO from the HP website, but with Virgin Media throttling my connection so much, I like to save my bandwidth allowance for importing things like pr0n and torrents.

So all in all, even the Mini-Note was £200,I wouldn't recommend it to a non-technical user, unlike a eEE PC (unless they have fat fingers like me).

I'm hoping Acer have invested some time in proper real world testing of whatever distribution they've decide on before releasing the Wind to the masses.

If so, then why the funk has the south had a different company developing their system?. Service Packs etc

Any sort of windows on a 1GB HDD PC is a pipe dream, what with the swap space, user data, as well as the temp files which windows apps love to create. I wonder if M$ will be 'donating' bigger flash drives?, A nice little tax write off.

I thought that would get your attention. Although on a serious note, I've installed SP3 successfully on our MD's home AMD based PC, which has the bog standard HP factory image on it (of course I tested it on a image of the PC before hand). So I wonder if the problem lies with users that have installed any of the recommend hardware driver updates within Windows Update?.

Re-bagged i-mobile, got one off ebay for £90 including import taxes. Screen is not bright enough to see in direct sunlight, which, as I've said before must be the reason they're marketing this as an inside the pub phone. The memory card slot eats cards (it fried two of my 1GB cards in the space of a week).

I had fun implementing C&B last year for a private hospital group, I'm not sure about the public website but the 'hospitals side' of the system didn't like IE7, so if you're having teething problems with it on IE7 you might want to add *.nhs.org to the allow list of the popup blocker, as well as sticking *.nhs.org.uk in the Trusted sites..

UKReg/FastHosts Suck

Like many others, I changed all my passwords back in October when the first balls up came to light, then moved my important bits to another host. When I tried to log in to UKReg this morning to complete the move and change my IPStags to my new DNS host, low and behold I was met with the 'Wrong Username & Password' message. I thought, 'right maybe its me and I've genuinly forgot my password' so I clicked on the Forgot Password link only to find "Unfortunately this service is unavailable at the moment. Please contact Customer Support for assistance.", so I try to call customer support and get "All lines are busy".

I'm now left sitting at my desk with UKReg/Fasthosts on redial contemplating driving up to Gloucester to speak to their 'Customer Support' face to face, if anyone wants to car pool drop me a line.
