Lag log leaks - Home Office contractor loses entire prison population

Danger Mouse

The Scenario

How it played out in my mind.

Home office bloke "John, we need some analysis of this data"

John from PA "Ahhh, alright, dump it to csv file on this stick, I'm working from home tomorrow I'll do it then"

Home office bloke "Golf this weekend?"

John from PA "Sure why not"

Home office bloke "Here's your stick back, see you Saturday"

John from PA "see you then"

John returns to office via a pub lunch on expenses, sits down at his desk turns on his laptop, inserts usb stick opens up expenses spreadsheet, does a bit of fiddling, saves it, removes it and places it on his desk just above the bin. Finishes up for the day, knocking his usb stick into the bin in his rush to beat the cue out of the car park.

Impossible I hear you say, nope, I've seen a previous 'manager' do exactly that, in my case he was fortunate that I had to look for a postit note with a phone number that I passed him early on in the day. I did let him sweat for a couple of hours the next day before sliding the key back on his desk after he informed his director. And no, I didn't like working for him :).

Microsoft starts stoking hype for Windows 7

Danger Mouse
Coat

WTF?

“We, as a team, definitely learned some lessons about ‘disclosure’ and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid"

Talking about features before understanding them, do they mean the marketing department tell the engineers what features Windows should have?, if so I think we've finally found the problem at Micro$haft, marketing department led engineering, ohhhh it can't be good.

However, keep it up Micro$haft, I'm going to earn another small fortune rolling out Windows 7 for customers, then another fortune applying the patches to fix the thing.

The first five Sky+ boxes I had all died on me due to one fault or another, so I took the plunge and upgraded to HD version, which seems to be holding out (touch wood). However, the UI is very very clunky, and takes an age to respond to the remote, which is a pain in the arse when pausing live footie if I'm gagging to drain the wee vein, it also skips the end of some programs which over run. Compared to the TiVO box I had in the states it comes in a very poor second (V+ HD would come in 4th, behind a betamax recorder.)

"The unanimous decision of the disciplinary panel sends out a clear statement about how seriously the Trust takes security and patient confidentiality." says Murphy. Well brains, if the Trust took it that seriously they would have taken the steps to roll out encrypted data store. It doesn't have to cost a lot, although, seeing as it's the NHS they will pick the most expensive solution when they eventually get their fat lazy heads around to it. Here's a tip, TruCrypt, it's free as in beer and will stop the average laptop thief stumbling across confidential information. Now there's no excuse.

@ andy gibson

I use p2p to distribute software updates for an OpenS app I wrote a couple of years ago which helps kids with learning difficulties. Now tell me, how exactly is that wrong?. Why, in your mind is it the customers fault that they are using the bandwidth that has been sold to them?. You, like many ISPs' seem to think that the TCP/IP starts with port 80 and ends with 443, which is all well and good, if the service is being sold as sole use of those ports. But hey, it's not so shut the f*ck up.

@ AC

I'll save time with my normal witty comments, in answer to your comments.

1. Yes M$ have fecked up a bit with every Exchange release, but even M$ wasn't foolish enough to release it as a service to paying end users, they left it to us in the 'job' to massage exchange into submission so it was usable, which happens before releasing any service to the end users. Comparing anything to a M$ product isn't going to win any arguments, we all know M$ is pants.

2. We use a Mac OSX for one of our DNS, well, one of our DNS's anyway, you see professionals like to go multi vendor on important stuff. As this is the only DNS platform which hasn't been fixed it is now switched off, leaving our Linux boxes(centos, ubuntu, debian) to answer the 2,000,000+ daily dns queries.

You seem to think this article is just another attack on Apple, well I would like to think ElReg would write up a similar article on any tech organisation who provide a PAID FOR service which appears to have not been fully tested/maintained. Oh, hang on a minute they have, for example:--

http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/05/27/paypal_glitch_weighs_on_merchants/

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/22/securesuite_ecommerce_glitch/

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/14/oyster_computer_problems/

Now, I'm going to bed with the safe knowledge that my non-Apple/M$ service platforms are ticking over nicely thank you.

HP Mini-Note

Just thought I'll mention it while we're on the subject of UMPC's. I got a HP Mini-Note the other day as my Eee was no match for my fat fingers. It came to £354 all in, not really worth it for the spec, but worth it to save the pain in my back lugging my full size laptop from datacentre to datacentre. And before you say it, yes I am made of money :).

Most of the online reviews are for the Vi$ta version so I thought I'll add a few notes on the Suse version on the off chance anyone is interested.

The Suse Desktop 10 enterprise implementation is appalling, sorry, I didn't mean appalling, it's the Antichrist. Whoever created the master image must have been drunk, it's almost as though he/she thought they were installing Window$. Firstly, Bootup time is around 60seconds, which isn't bad if it was running XP or Vista, but 60 seconds with a linux OS? come on HP do your homework. There's a hundred and one other problems with it, but the most amateurish 'issues' are with software installation/updates configuration, i.e

Yast is configured to look at a local optical drive for file repositories (guess what, yeah, there isn't one)

Online Update is configured is configured to look at a local optical drive for update repositories (As above).

A majority of the applets listed in the System & Tools section of the god awful menu system are not installed, so guess what happens when it asks if you want to install the missing applet?, yeah you guessed it, it looks for the CD/DVD.

HP do not supply a restore disk/flashkey with the Mini-note, and there is'nt a built in mechanism to create one, and before you ask why would you want a restore CD if there isn't an optical drive?, HP do supply an instruction manual on CD, go figure. However, you can phone HP support and ask them to send you a restored CD (after 30mins on hold while the nice man from call centre Goa asks his supervisor WTF as they don't seem to have any documentation on the Suse version of the Mini-note). I believe you can download an ISO from the HP website, but with Virgin Media throttling my connection so much, I like to save my bandwidth allowance for importing things like pr0n and torrents.

So all in all, even the Mini-Note was £200,I wouldn't recommend it to a non-technical user, unlike a eEE PC (unless they have fat fingers like me).

I'm hoping Acer have invested some time in proper real world testing of whatever distribution they've decide on before releasing the Wind to the masses.
