Apple: If you're under 17, you can't use Opera

Kenneth Ross

Talk about losing the plot...........

You got to be 17 to download Opera, and you can't use Adobe's Automatic Translation tools for Flash, because Flash is the main cause of Macs crashing............

Apple are losing the plot. If its not big bad Microsoft, then its big bad Adobe. There's something wrong with the kid who keeps insisting "It wasn't me. The big boys did it and ran away"

If this was MS, the outcry would be deafening

If Microsoft were doing this (i.e., building in a capability to remove software if they see fit, there would be an outcry. And the European Union would fine them half a billion dollars.

Can't stand the one-sided criticism of MS, while blind eye is turned to other companies equally dodgy practices.

Makes me glad (for now) that I've got 'Intel inside'

yes, your intel inside defines a new standard in SHITE graphics. well done!

seriously mate intel graphic chipsets are terrible compared to nv or amd. steer well clear or face crap colours and a blurry display! not to mention horrendous 3d performance

response to Liam.......

Everything relative, I guess. My laptop is a business, not a gaming tool, so

3D performance is not an issue. But if what you want is high-end laptop graphics, then I agree that you won't find them with an integrated Intel chipset.

Flying cars on the horizon, says Clive Sinclair

It had to be, hadn't it. A C5 with wings!

I read the headline. I thought of the comment. I scrolled down the article. I saw the picture.

And now I know. The Register are in league with Echelon, black helicopters and every other conspiracy out there.

Might not have been exactly orthodox, but no doubt that he believed in God.

Besuited cubicle monkey trashes office

Did he get tazered?

Watched the phone video - crackling sound right at the end: did the security guy (label on sleeve) tazer him? Any idea where this was?

BestBuy blasts into UK with Carphone Warehouse buy

Kenneth Ross

Best-buy - smiling all the way to the bank!

It doesn't take a math genius to figure this one. BestBuy force their suppliers to sell them stock at the same price they get it in the US - then they pass on the typical US prices to the UK buying public - Oh no, don't be silly....

They buy at the same prices as they do in the US, then make a much bigger profit selling the items here than they could ever do in the States. Maybe just a little bit less than Dixons / PC World / Comet etc. (maybe at typical online retailer prices), and still make far bigger profit than Stateside.

Smiling all the way to the bank!

White House admits non-existent email backups

Kenneth Ross

Don't worry, Echelon will save the day!

Don't panic, Don't panic - just get a back-up copy from Echelon. They keep everybody's emails, text messages, phone calls, dreams. (Oh dear, black helicopter hovering over house as I type!)

New York lawmakers approve 'Amazon Tax'

Kenneth Ross

Should try Europe.........

In the UK, we pay 17.5% sales tax (VAT). Have to pay similar sales tax on anything we buy from elsewhere in Europe, and pay same sales tax + import duty + handling charge on anything we purchase from the US.

Even software downloads from the US have European VAT (of at least 17.5% )added to them.

So whilst I can understand the frustration of NY residents at having to pay a tax they didn't have to up until now, I do think they ought to know how things are the other side of 'The Pond'.

Has your shifty foreign neighbour got 16 mobes?

You'ld never suspect your own daughter!

It never seemed, well, normal, that a 13 year old would need so many phones. 4 at the last count, and now it all makes sense. That poster really brings it home!

Enraged vegan spitroasts Reg hack

Go

It's the way you raise them!

While standing at the butchery counter in our local farm store last Saturday, my 13 year old daughter (who is slim, smart, and sporty - all things that the Vegan community seem to think you can't be if you eat red meat and dairy products), gazed at the display of beef in front of us and said "Dad, doesn't that just make you glad you're not a vegetarian!"

Glad and proud to be an omnivore!

Scottish Government to block wind farm plan

Response to Anonymous Coward

Yet again another Scottish Executive triumph of Ideology over common sense.

You got in with it before I did, AC.

No nuclear, no wind power...... What will we burn, apart from our bridges with the rest of the UK, and just about any other nation that is making economic progress.

Doesn't it make you wonder why I dread the prospect of a 'Nationalist' Scotland'. It's all about ideology, and the votes of folk who have watched Braveheart, and forgot it was a movie.

Three Little Pigs book deemed offensive to Muslims

Joke

BECTA - censorship of Three Little Pigs part of bigger conspiracy

Thought I'd come across Becta before - Of course, they are the folks who still believe schools should not expose students to the latest Microsoft products (ie., strongly against schools installing Office 2007 - and, I suppose, Vista too). Shame - because it's what they will likely be using in the work place.

Now, it's just struck me - Becta's real enemy is not the Three Little Pigs - it's actually Little Red(mond) Riding Hood!

Fertility watchdogs approve first human-animal hybrids

response to Anonymous Coward

Perhaps have a look here........

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/89136.php

"Professor Ian Wilmut, Edinburgh University, who led the team that created Dolly the sheep - a cloned sheep - says he is abandoning the cloning of human embryos as a Japanese method is the best one for stem cell research and the future. Wilmut added that the Japanese method has the best chance of leading to effective cures for chronic conditions and diseases. Wilmut says he had met with his team and they all agreed."

Just one example of a leading embryonic cloning advocate, who is shifting his research to adult cell types.

I agree that this is an ethical issue, but it is not only about ethics. Yes, my moral / ethical viewpoint sees a fertilised cell as a living entity, and I believe a human embryo has an intrinsic spiritual value, but even if this argument was based purely on the best way to use limited grant funding, then the evidence right now seems to be pointing away from embryonic stem cell work.

Kenneth Ross

Will the first cure from embryonic stem cell research please stand up....please....anyone?

We found emotion being pushed to allow embryonic stem cell research. Christopher Reeve, in his wheel chair; Ronald Reagan's son, on his father's Alzheimers condition. All emotive pleas for why we should allow this research. But has it actually helped anyone? No, it hasn't.

Adult stem-cell work, however, is showing remarkable promise, and many leading researchers who were previously advocates for embryonic stem cell research are now saying that adult, not embryonic is where the future lies.

So why are we doing this? Because, I fear, too many scientists are only interested in the question "can we?", and are frustrated by those who ask "should we?".

My background is in medical genetics, my interest now lies in medical ethics.

I, like the previous poster, (Matty), believe that this is a step too far. Yes, you are right, it is "plain wrong".

Microsoft hit by two more EC probes

Kenneth Ross

How much of this is EU v. USA?

I get so fed up with this whole 'bash Microsoft' nonsense. What do people buy? They buy MS. I have OpenOffice and MS Office on my PC. What do I use? MS every time. Anonymous Coward - I'm sorry your girl-friend gave up on Office 2007. I think it is a brilliant suite of apps, but I did have to learn some new stuff - but that's life.

Microsoft - big successful American corporation. EU - more than it's fair share of anti-American detractors (who don't like Capitalism, full stop)

IT Angle

And the IT angle?

Why publish this? I read the Reg to keep up to date with what is happening in the world of IT, and also a bit of science. Would this have been counted so newsworthy if the poor guy was not a pastor? I'm a pastor too, there's none of us perfect, but this guy's (and his family's, and his church's) tragedy does not need to be reported here.

Also noted that the path. report is for a 41 year old, not a 51 year old as this guy was. Is the report wrong. Is any other part of the report wrong? Maybe we should be told.

I'm much more interested in finding out when we'll see a successor to the XDA Exec. (HTC Omni). Mine isn't going to last much longer.
